Vision
Built into the core of every organization is a culture of wellness that supports and honors each individual’s health and well-being.Health and well-being is prioritized at the same level as other trainings in law enforcement.
Approach
In partnership with law enforcement leaders, professionals, and advocates, UC San Diego developed 720° Health to improve the health and well-being of law enforcement professionals and agencies. 360° awareness on the outside + 360° awareness on the inside = 720° Health.
More than 60 agencies have enrolled to date. This Organizational Wellness Initiative brings agencies through a process of internal evaluation and customization to develop a wellness program that fits each agency’s unique needs:
- People First:
- Internal leaders are identified at each agency to become trained as Organizational Wellness Coordinator(s)
- A team of champions for wellness are developed at each agency across ranks and includes professional staff
- A variety of stakeholders (e.g. union/association reps, city council members, human resources, risk management, etc.) are engaged from the start
- Data-Driven: All stakeholders including employees agency-wide to identify the most pressing needs for health and well-being training and resources
- Customized: Mentors with expertise in lammw enforcement wellness support Organizational Wellness Coordinators in creating and implementing an Agency Wellness Plan to address goals for improving wellness culture
- Practical Hands-On Training: Live, online, and mobile personalized health and well-being training is specifically designed for law enforcement professionals, command staff, and agency wellness leaders
- Outcomes-Focused: UC San Diego researchers support protected, confidential analysis and ongoing monitoring of outcomes at the individual and agency levels
Our guiding principles:
- Wellness is not a luxury; it is the foundation of excellence, performance, and longevity for law enforcement professionals
- While the extreme stress encountered by most law enforcement professionals results in higher risk of consequences, poor health outcomes should not be presumptive, but instead, be prevented
- Wellness programs in law enforcement should be preventive as well as responsive
- Like other perishable skills, wellness for law enforcement professionals and agencies requires ongoing attention and training that must be prioritized
- Wellness involves the whole person--body, mind and spirit--and requires an integrative approach
- Wellness plans must be personalized for each individual, and customized for each agency. A “cookie-cutter” approach is inadequate.
- Law enforcement professional individual wellness is reliant on creating a culture of wellness in each organization, and the success of each organization relies on the wellness of its professionals

720° Health Curriculum
The 720° Health Program begins with a personal health goals survey. Participants then work through a series of training and modules reflecting their personalized learning needs and receive regular text message tips and reminders. Participants assess their progress through the 12-week program with midpoint and endpoint wellness surveys.
Wearable Devices
A subset of the 720° Health Program participants are enrolled in an additional wearables program, in which they wear a fitness tracker throughout the 12-week period. Participants can view their wellness and activity metrics in an accompanying application.
