What Yoga Does to Your Body and Mind
There are many different approaches to modern yoga— though most forms have three core elements: physical postures, breathing exercises, and spiritual contemplation. This blend of physical and mental exercise is widely believed to have a unique set of health advantages. But is yoga actually beneficial to your health? Krishna Sudhir examines how this ancient tradition impacts the body and mind.
Activity: "Connecting with Your Breath and Body"
- Set the Stage:
Find a quiet space where you can sit comfortably. Take a few moments to settle into your position, whether sitting or standing. If you’re sitting, ensure that your feet are flat on the ground, your back is straight, and your hands rest gently on your lap. - Begin with Your Breath:
Start by bringing your attention to your breath. Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of four, hold for a count of four, and then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six. Do this for a few rounds, allowing your breath to deepen and your body to relax with each inhale and exhale. - Notice the Sensations in Your Body:
As you breathe deeply, bring awareness to how your body feels. Notice any areas of tension, tightness, or discomfort. With each exhale, imagine releasing any tension, softening those areas, and allowing your body to become more at ease. - Reflection:
After a few moments of mindful breathing, take a few seconds to reflect on your current state of mind and body. How does your body feel now compared to before the breathing exercise? What sensations, emotions, or thoughts have surfaced as you focused on your breath and body?
Reflection Questions:
- Physical Awareness:
- How does focusing on your breath and body help you tune into physical sensations or areas of tension that you might otherwise overlook? What did you notice about your body that you hadn’t been aware of before the exercise?
- Emotional Check-In:
- During the breathing exercise, were there any emotions or thoughts that came up? How did you handle them? Did breathing help you manage or shift your emotional state?
- Practical Application in Law Enforcement:
- How can you use this practice of focusing on your breath and body to manage stress or maintain focus during high-pressure situations in your work as a law enforcement officer? Reflect on how mindfulness can enhance your decision-making or overall presence on the job.
